Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?
I was into tumbling ballet dancing and tap from age 3 to 6. My dance studio was down the street from a Greek restaurant which was down the street from our home. My mom was a belly dance teacher right next door to my dance class. Always finish my dance class before my mom’s classes are over. So I’d go and watch her classes and sometimes I try a couple of the moves. Mind you at the age of 6 I began to take dance lessons for my mom and thus began my journey as a belly dancer. It was funny because my mom used to always say that I would co-create the dances because I would never just stick to the steps that she gave me. I was able to do some amazing things cuz I’m really danced training and perform across the Midwest. The way the Gyros fits in is because after dance class we would always order a Gyros and split it. So every Saturday I looked forward to going to Morse Gyros and splitting one with Mom we would always order extra naan and extra cucumber sauce. Eventually it turned into me ordering my own Gyros and extra naan as I got older. What I wouldn’t give to have those moments back. My mom passed in 2019 due to Colon and Liver Cancer. Now all I have is amazing memories. Please hug your mom and tell her that you love her everyday. Recognize how blessed you are to still have her in your life. The last major thing that we did together was go see Black Panther. What a blessing to be able to share that history making moment with her.
